Psalm 27
Philippians 3:17-4:1
Luke 13:31-35

Today, we are focusing on a vital truth for our spiritual journey—"
The Singleness of Purpose."

Let me begin with a story. Imagine a marathon runner. The race is long, and along the way, there are distractions—cheering crowds, competitors trying to discourage him, fatigue setting in. But the runner has one goal: to reach the finish line. Nothing else matters.

Likewise, as Christians, we are called to run the race of faith with unwavering focus. Yet, we face distractions—worldly desires, trials, and opposition. The question is: Are we keeping our eyes fixed on God's purpose?

Psalm 27: Confidence in God’s Purpose

David, the author of this psalm, was a man of one thing. Despite facing enemies and troubles, he declared:

"One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life..." (Psalm 27:4)

David’s priority was to seek God above all else. His confidence in God kept him from fear, as he proclaimed in Psalm 27:1, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" He knew that his success and peace came from dwelling in God’s presence.

What is your one thing? Is God your highest priority? Are you distracted by other pursuits—wealth, status, personal ambitions?

Philippians 3:17-4:1 – Pressing Toward the Goal

Paul echoes this same focus when he says:

"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:14)

Paul warns about two types of people. First, those who focus on earthly things, as described in Philippians 3:18-19. Their minds are set on temporary pleasures, not eternal rewards. Second, those who focus on heaven, knowing that their true citizenship is in heaven, eagerly awaiting Christ (Philippians 3:20-21).

Spiritual growth requires forgetting the past and moving forward. We must avoid distractions and press on toward God’s calling. Our ultimate reward is eternal life with Christ.

Are you holding on to past failures or successes instead of moving forward? Is your mind set on earthly concerns, or do you live with eternity in view?

Luke 13:31-35 – Jesus’ Unwavering Purpose

In this passage, some Pharisees warn Jesus that Herod wants to kill Him. But Jesus responds:

"I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!" (Luke 13:33)

Despite threats, Jesus remained focused on His mission—to die for our sins and fulfill God’s plan. He refused to be intimidated by earthly authorities. He stayed committed to His God-given assignment. Even though He grieved over Jerusalem’s rejection, He remained resolute in His mission.

Are you allowing fear or opposition to derail your faith? Are you committed to fulfilling God’s purpose, no matter the cost?

Conclusion: Stay Focused on God's Purpose

From David, Paul, and Jesus, we learn that singleness of purpose is essential for our Christian walk.

Like David, make seeking God your highest priority. Like Paul, press forward, leaving behind distractions. Like Jesus, stay committed despite challenges.

What distractions are pulling you away from God? Are you willing to surrender them and refocus on Christ?

Closing Prayer

"Lord, help us to live with singleness of purpose. Remove distractions, strengthen our faith, and keep us focused on Your will. May we seek You first, press toward the mark, and fulfill the calling You have placed on our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen."
